Sight Words Assessment Checklist
A whole Dolch level on one sheet, with three boxes per word for three check-ins.
How to check sight words
- Sit somewhere quiet and show one word at a time, on a flash card or by pointing.
- Give about three seconds. A sight word is one the child reads without sounding it out.
- Tick the box if it was instant. Leave it blank if they guessed, stopped, or sounded it out.
- Stop if your child gets tired. Finish another day, and practice only the blank ones.
What to do with the results
Take the words left blank, choose five, and make those your focus for the week. The list maker turns them into a game. Check again in a few weeks, using the next box.
Questions
How often should I assess?
Every few weeks is plenty. Three boxes cover a term or a whole year, depending on how you use them.
What counts as knowing a word?
Reading it quickly and correctly, without sounding it out, on more than one day.
Is it really free?
Yes. Print as many as you like for home or class. Each sheet carries our web address at the bottom, and that's the only catch.

An app is on the way
We're building a Wordburrow app for iPhone. The plan is everything you can play here, plus offline play and a parent view of the words that have stuck. It isn't out yet. The whole game is free here in the meantime.
